Meet Ian Edwards: Expert SEND Consultant and Advocate for Inclusive Education

With over 20 years of experience in the education sector - across the UK, Thailand, Dubai, the Channel Islands, and Portugal - I’m Ian Edwards, a UK-trained SENCO with a deep commitment to helping schools enhance their SEND provision and supporting families and students to thrive.

My career began as a secondary and sixth-form drama teacher, but it was my passion for inclusion and belief in the potential of every student that shaped my journey and led me to become a SENCO. I hold the NASENCO postgraduate qualification, equipping me with the knowledge and expertise to drive meaningful, lasting change in schools around the world.

I am also a fully qualified examination access arrangements assessor, working with both schools and families to identify and implement appropriate exam access arrangements for students. These assessments are always carried out in liaison with the child’s school to ensure they meet JCQ requirements and remain valid for formal applications. Alongside this, I support parents and carers directly, providing tailored advice and guidance to help secure the right support for their child within their educational setting.

My work as a SENCO has its roots in my early teaching experiences in economically challenged areas of West Yorkshire, where I saw firsthand how often students’ needs went unmet. Those formative years showed me the power of inclusion and the importance of becoming a catalyst for change - removing barriers to learning and ensuring every child receives the support they deserve.

At iSEND Consultancy, our mission is to deliver specialist, bespoke support to schools that are committed to improving outcomes for students with SEND. We believe inclusion is not just a goal but a mindset - one that should underpin every aspect of a school’s culture. Our approach is built around identifying, investing, implementing, and creating impact, so that each school can meet its students’ diverse needs while fostering a truly inclusive environment.

We work collaboratively with schools, offering cost-effective, flexible remote consultancy services to strengthen their SEND provision. Through audits, strategy development, staff training, and ongoing support, we help schools align with current best practice and continuously improve their inclusive practices.

My philosophy is simple: every school can and should be inclusive, empowering all students — and staff — to achieve their potential. By offering expert guidance and nurturing a culture of reflection and improvement, I help schools remove barriers and unlock opportunities for every learner.

iClass — Improving Choices, Learning, and Social Skills

In addition to my consultancy work, I lead our unique iClass service — delivered by a dedicated team of tutor-coaches - which offers personalised coaching and mentoring for students, parents, and educators.

Unlike traditional tuition, iClass is designed to develop key life skills such as self-regulation, confidence, learning strategies, and social skills. Our tutor-coaches work with students over a series of sessions to help them address the challenges they face in school and everyday life, whether that’s managing emotions, staying organised, building friendships, or improving focus and motivation.

For parents and carers, we offer practical coaching to help establish effective routines, targets, and strategies at home — supporting families to create a positive and structured environment for their child to succeed.

We also work with educators, collaborating to create a tailored toolkit of realistic, effective strategies for supporting students with SEND in their specific classroom and school context.

All iClass programmes are individually tailored: we begin with a comprehensive questionnaire and consultation to understand your needs and goals, and then build a customised programme that’s right for you or your child.

By combining my expertise in SEND consultancy, exam access assessments, and coaching services like iClass, I am proud to offer a comprehensive, inclusive suite of support for students, families, and schools alike.
