A-Level Results Day: A Guide for Students with SEND

Published on 14 August 2025 at 09:30

Results Day can feel like a rollercoaster – especially if you have Special Educational Needs or Disabilities (SEND). You may be comparing what you expected to get (often the grades needed for university or a job offer) with what you actually achieved. Whatever your results, there are always next steps and support to help you move forward.

If You Got the Grades You Needed:

  • Celebrate! You’ve worked hard.
  • Confirm your university or job place.
  • Contact your university’s disability support team to arrange any adjustments you’ll need from day one.

If You Just Missed Your Grades:

  • Speak to your school or college immediately - ask about priority marking reviews and Clearing options.
  • Contact your chosen university - some may still offer you a place.
  • Keep records of any adjustments you’ve had, in case you need to explain your circumstances.

If Your Grades Were Much Lower Than Expected:

  • Don’t panic – there are still options: Clearing, apprenticeships, college courses, or a gap year to resit.
  • Talk to your SEND coordinator or careers adviser – they can help map your options.
  • Employers and training providers can often offer adjustments if you ask.

People Who Can Help You Right Now:

  • School/College SEND Coordinator – for tailored guidance.
  • Careers Adviser or Sixth-Form Team – for course, apprenticeship, and job advice.
  • UCAS Helpline – for Clearing and Adjustment.
  • University Disability Services – to set up reasonable adjustments.
  • National Careers Service – for free, impartial advice.

Remember:

  • Your grades do not define your future.
  • There are always multiple routes to your goal.
  • Talking to universities or employers can unlock opportunities you didn’t know were there.
  • Asking for support is a strength – and the sooner you do it, the more options you’ll have.

Whatever your results, you have choices. Reach out, ask questions, and take it one step at a time – you’re not on this journey alone.
